The Drawings
“Today class, I’m going to show you how to solve Arithmetic equations and word problems.” Mr. Royadie got out a piece of chalk.
He was a stocky man with prissy short, gray hair. In his late fifties, he still wore a tie to school. Mr. Royadie was always in his finest business shirts, beige pants, and designer glasses. Most kids in class called him either “Roll or Die” due to his strange name or “Big breasted Man.” We preferred “Big-breasted Man,” since it suited him, and he had bigger breasts than some of the girls in school.
You could see his saggy tits and nipples through his tight shirt. Ronin, Clyde, and Winston would cringe whenever Mr. Royadie got too close to them. He may have been clean-cut, yet he wasn’t an attractive man to look at with his liver spots, constant frown, and bulging nose. Despite his appearance, he had an egotistical attitude, and wasn’t afraid to make students look stupid in his class. I was sitting in sixth period, Algebra II class, with both my elbows on the desk.
I had a hand on my cheek, an automatic pencil, and loose paper in front of me. My body may have been a participant in class, but my mind was not. I wished school would end already, because it wasn’t one of my good days. The classroom appeared to be simplistic in design and function. It was box-shaped with white walls on all sides, and in front of the room there was a green chalkboard.
There was a desk for Mr. Royadie, which stood right next to the only entrance and exit. The door had a small window at the top with crossing metal bars inside the glass. Classrooms didn’t look too welcoming for incoming freshmen and I could see why. I viewed the outer brick shell of concrete through the huge rectangular windows. The red-and-white patterns of what made my high school (the pinnacle of education) look more like a jailhouse than anything else.
“I’ll go step-by-step and we’ll start with the first equation.” Mr. Royadie started writing his first demonstration on the board.
“Now, who can tell me what is the first thing I should do? Anyone care to join on in?” He glanced around the classroom looking for raised hands.
I suddenly fell out of my chair. Everyone in class began to giggle and snort; some had their hands over their mouths to prevent them from bursting with laughter.
“What’s the matter with you?” Mr. Royadie wrinkled his brow and crossed his greasy arms.
My lips trembled. “Sorry…” I picked myself up and then sat quietly in my chair.
“What am I going to do with you? Can I teach without you falling down in your chair?” Mr. Royadie stared at me with a scowl of disapproval.
I nodded. Yes…
Mr. Royadie turned around and continued on with his lecture. “The problem consists of two variables, if we move variables that are alike then we can balance this equation out and solve 2X plus Y equals X,” he stated.
I sunk into my seat. It was as if I was a pebble in my teacher’s shoe or more like a thorn in his side. I was the incredible shrinking boy disappearing from my desk all together. An embarrassment of a lifetime, yet it wasn’t the first time I had fallen out of my chair. Blood dripped from my nose onto my desk.
